The 2015 RiverFest Community Float trip on the Lower White Salmon River was an incredible success today, with over 120 registered rafters going out in three groups of rafts from Wet Planet Whitewater, All Adventures Rafting, River Drifters, Blue Sky Rafting, and All Star Rafting. The day started with registration confirmations and presentations on the local geology (Lloyd DeKay of Ice Age Floods Institute), restoration updates (Jeanette Burkhardt of Yakima Fisheries), and fish restoration (Brady Allen of US Geological Survey). Then Wet Planet’s Gianni gave a rousing update on river changes since dam removal, before we all got fitted out and hit the river.
The low water levels made it a bit tougher than usual and one raft experienced a huge gash and a slow leak that ended up tying up the entire group for quite awhile just below the old dam site. But everyone was thrilled to see the “lower-lower”, many for the first time. Runs through narrow walled canyons past side entering waterfalls, fun rapids, and lots of new birds and fish to see made it extra special.
Tonight (7/15) there’s a 6:00 pm kayak slalom over Husum Falls followed by music at Big Man’s BBQ in Husum.until 8:00 (or later).
